There was plenty of soft drink and tea for people to drink, as well as a case of pijiu he’d bought specifically for today. He couldn’t bring himself to feel any guilt or shame about this fact at all, however, so he continued to lay the snacks and popcorn out on the table in preparation for their guests. This was, Zhao Yunlan reflected a few days later, going to be absolutely terrible and it was all his fault.

And since Ye Zun was with his brother when Zhao Yunlan brought it up, that was how Ye Zun got roped into the movie watch as well. Shen Wei had no clue what this was all about, but happily agreed to watch it since Zhao Yunlan wanted to. Zhao Yunlan loved Shen Wei, he really did, but the chance to see how the good professor and Black Robed Envoy reacted to this trainwreck of a movie was just too good to pass up. Da Qing, of course, was completely wrong. That was not something that Zhao Yunlan could really deny, especially not when he wanted to watch this one because it was horrible, but after much cajoling, begging, and threatening to withhold fish snacks, Da Qing eventually acquiesced on the condition that Shen Wei also watched it, as Da Qing assumed that Zhao Yunlan wouldn’t subject his wife to anything truly horrible. If a movie about cats was truly as bad as all this said, then there was no way he could pass up Dead Cat’s reactions to such a horror.ĭa Qing, naturally enough, objected on the grounds that Zhao Yunlan’s taste in movies was horrible. Of course Da Qing had to watch Cats with him. Then he grinned, pulling out a lollipop to suck on while he started to make plans. Zhao Yunlan read that line, then read it again. ‘God, I can't even look my own cat in the eye for a while.’
And it may have just ended there, with Zhao Yunlan watching the movie himself with copious amounts of alcohol to entertain himself while Shen Wei was at a conference or something, were it not for the final line of the last review he read. It certainly sounded like something he did not want to watch sober, something with which several of the reviews agreed. With each successive review, Zhao Yunlan knew that he had to watch this movie, just to see for himself how truly bad it was.
‘Will haunt viewers for generations’, the reviews continued. Zhao Yunlan saw the first review – ‘I Have Seen Sights No Human Should See’ – and was instantly fascinated in the same way that one gets fascinated by watching an inevitable trainwreck.
